THE MATERIAL BEHIND FIFTY

MATERIALS & CARE

FIFTY refers to Element 50 on the periodic table: tin - a metal so trusted, only platinum, gold and silver are valued above it. Melt it with copper and antimony and it becomes pewter: poured molten into moulds, cooled, released, polished by hand until it finds its glow. Lead-free, always, and compliant with EU health and safety standards. This is the material behind our name, and the beginning of everything we make.

WHY PEWTER

We chose pewter because it has presence: visually, physically, and emotionally. It brings together warmth, weight, and quiet beauty.

Pewter has the gentle glow of silver, with a warmer feel than stainless steel and more ease in everyday care than silver. It is made mainly from tin, carrying material value, history, and a sense of weight you can feel.

For centuries, pewter has been used in homes for tableware, bowls, and objects made to be kept. It is a material with history, but also with ease. Over time, it develops a gentle patina, taking on traces of touch, use, and life.

Pewter is a material that lives with you. Its surface reacts to touch, light, and time. With use, pewter can take on a gentle patina. Small shifts in tone, soft marks, and traces of handling become part of the piece. They do not take away from its beauty. They deepen it. This is why we love the material. Pewter feels like an heirloom in the making: it ages beautifully, becoming less anonymous and more personal with every year in your home.

How to Care for Pewter

Simple care for a lasting piece.

Pewter is lead-free and easy to live with - it asks very little of you, but it gives a lot. Wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth after use. If it needs more, clean by hand with warm water and a little mild soap, then dry completely. Avoid abrasive sponges, harsh cleaners, and prolonged contact with moisture or acidic substances. Keep it away from the dishwasher, oven, microwave and direct heat. Over time, pewter may develop a gentle patina - part of its character, not a flaw. If you prefer a brighter finish, a suitable pewter polish will do the trick.
